2006 Porsche Cayman S 6-Speed
Private Collection | Not For Sale | Display-Only
The 2006 Porsche Cayman S is a two-seat, mid-engine sports coupe introduced as an all-new model for 2006. Designed to bridge the gap between the entry-level Boxster roadster and the flagship Porsche 911, it is highly celebrated by automotive enthusiasts for its exceptional balance, precision handling, and analog driving feel.
Known to enthusiasts as the 987.1 generation, the 2006 Cayman's mid-engine layout is the car's defining characteristic. Because the engine sits directly behind the seats but ahead of the rear axle, the car has a near-perfect center of gravity. It rotates and corners with immense stability compared to front- or rear-engine cars.
The standard and optional features for the 2006 Porsche Cayman S show that Porsche provided the core performance hardware as standard equipment but treated almost every comfort, technology, and aesthetic detail as an extra-cost option. The most notable of which is the Sport Chrono Package, which adds a dash-mounted stopwatch and a "Sport" button that sharpens throttle response, while relaxing the PSM traction boundaries. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) were also available.
The 987.1 is highly sought after today because it represents the sweet spot of modern-classic sports cars—blending analog driver connection with modern performance at a highly accessible price point. It features traditional hydraulic power steering rather than the electronic systems found in newer cars, offering better road feel and feedback through the steering wheel. Though heavily based on the Boxster chassis, adding a fixed aluminum roof made the body 100% stiffer than the convertible, allowing for a much sharper, retuned suspension.
Because of its unique layout, it features two storage areas—a "frunk" (front trunk) and a rear hatchback boot—making it a surprisingly usable daily commuter.
The 2006 Cayman was powered exclusively by a 3.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-6 boxer engine producing 295 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual or an optional 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transaxle. There was no base model for the initial 2006 rollout. Porsche uniquely chose to launch the car top-down, introducing only the high-performance Cayman S for the 2006 model year, and the base model a year later for 2007.
