The 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG is an ultra-high-performance, flagship grand touring coupe powered by a hand-built 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine. Representing the absolute pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz hierarchy during the mid-2000s, it combined supercar levels of acceleration with top-tier luxury and a pillarless coupe design. With just 142 examples produced for the US market, the 2005 CL65 is highly regarded by enthusiasts as the legendary "autobahn missile" and is increasingly collectible due to its extreme performance and very low production numbers.
Power is provided by a hand-built M275 6.0L Biturbo V12 engine producing 604 horsepower and a massive 738 lb-ft of torque. Though torque was electronically limited to protect the transmission, the engine could produce up to 885 lb-ft unconstrained. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission with specialized AMG SpeedShift software, engineered to electronically cap torque at 738 lb-ft and optimize shift speeds.
As a rolling showcase for early-2000s technological innovation, the 2005 CL65 AMG featured advanced electronics, pioneering safety systems, and hydraulic engineering that still rivals modern sports cars.
Active Body Control (ABC) is a high-pressure (3,000 psi) hydraulic active suspension system that utilizes sensors to monitor vehicle movement every few milliseconds, and use hydraulic servos to instantly pressurize individual struts. This completely eliminates body roll during cornering and prevents pitching during heavy braking or hard acceleration, allowing a 4,600-lb luxury coupe to handle like a much lighter sports car.
The interior of the CL65 was designed to look and feel like a private luxury jet, and paired high-end materials with a completely pillarless window design, creating an airy, open cabin when the windows are lowered. Notable features include exclusive hand-stitched Nappa leather seating, dashboard, center console, door panels, and rear deck lid, Alcantara headliner, Burled Walnut wood trim, and subtle AMG branding on the gauge cluster and seats.
Additional features include dynamic multi-contour seats with massaging, rapid heating and active ventilation, dual-pane insulated glass that minimizes cabin noise at high speeds, pneumatic soft-close doors, COMAND Infotainment System with GPS navigation, and an 11-speaker Bose Centerpoint surround-sound audio system.
